Focus on Ingredients ~ Rice Powder

Welcome to our second edition of Focus on Ingredients! In today's post we'll be telling you about one of our favorite ingredients: Rice Powder. We have been using this wonderful ingredient for 10 years now in our Finishing Powder, and recently came out with Pistachio: our first eye shadow that includes Rice Powder! There is so much to love about this phenomenal ingredient, so let's get started with some history, shall we?

According to our research, women (and men!) in Indonesia and Japan have been using Rice Powder as skincare since the 16th Century... they're way ahead of us! Women in Indonesia would soak the rice with fresh water and would skim the frothy layer from the top to then dehydrate and make it into a powder form. Field workers would also benefit from the frothy goodness, as they would apply it to their sun-exposed skin, which after hours of work, would remain intact from sun damage! Meanwhile, Japanese Geishas would use Rice Powder as a way to lighten and heal their porcelain skin. Fast-forward a few hundred years to 1950 when it was made into a compact form and available for us to use easily - without soaking or froth! Thank goodness for that! Now we can find Rice Powder in masks, moisturizers, skin cleansers and yes... Finishing Powders! So the Rice Powder we use today is made from uncooked rice which is finely ground to form a powder. It is a wonderful and more natural alternative to talc. Now that we've got the history covered, let's move on to the benefits which led this ingredient to our shelves today.

Rice Powder naturally has a high concentration of Allantoin and Ferulic Acid, which aid in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the UV rays that our faces are exposed to on a daily basis. UV rays are the cause of sun damage which causes our skin to form wrinkles and ages the skin. We have also read that Rice Powder contains B Vitamins which boosts new cell production and delays the process of skin aging.

Our foundations also contain a large percentage of Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide which are wonderful physical sunscreens. Since have not gone through the expensive FDA Testing, we can't advertise a SPF rating. We recommend applying a layer of Finishing Powder over your Foundation for its ability to help your makeup last longer. Rice Powder leaves a silky, matte finish on the skin and is great for all skin types. Plus it helps to make the pores appear smaller. (Tip: some of our customers with oily skin have mentioned that they use our Finishing Powder underneath their Foundation too).

If you appreciate and strive for a matte finish and a flawless, natural look, this is the ingredient for you!

(Another Tip: If you prefer more of a dewy glow, just add a little of our Glow Bronzer after applying your Foundation and Finishing Powder)

Focus on Ingredients ~ The Benefits of Watermelon Seed Oil

Lucy Minerals has been blending Beauty Oils since 2009. We discovered that using blends of luxurious Natural Oils helps to balance the oil production of the skin, while keeping the skin soft, smooth and perfectly moisturized. Many of our oily skinned customers were stripping their skin of all natural oils in order to try to keep their makeup from sliding off their face. The thing is, by stripping away the oil, it causes the skin to pump out even more oil to try to compensate for the loss… it's a vicious circle. By using a few drops of our Beauty Oil mixed with a little water, our Beauty Oils will soak right into the skin and help to nourish and moisturize the skin with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. They are wonderful for all skin types. We are proud to say that all of our Beauty Oils are also safe to use around the eye area.

This being said, we wanted to focus on one particular
ingredient that we use in three* of our beauty oils: Watermelon Seed Oil, also
known as ‘Ootanga oil’ and ‘Kalahari oil’. Since Africa is believed to be the
place of origin of the watermelon, historians trace its origin to the Kalahari
Desert of Africa. Watermelon seeds
have been prized for the highly nutritive oil that they contain. The process
that is used to extract the oil starts by removing the seeds from the watermelon,
washing them thoroughly and then they are allowed to dry. Once dried, the seeds are
then cold pressed to extract the beneficial oil. Watermelon seed oil contains
high amounts of unsaturated fatty acids. Watermelon seed oil is light, easily absorbed, does not clog pores
and is rich in linoleic and oleic acids.

This wonder oil has many benefits for the skin and hair and
the lightness of this oil makes it perfect for all skin types, including oily
skin. Watermelon Seed Oil is known to help to diminish dark circles and puffiness around the eyes, and also reduces the appearance of wrinkles. Additionally, the comedogenic** rating of
Watermelon Seed Oil is zero; which means it is perfect for acne-prone skin. Watermelon
Seed Oil is also a perfect choice for hair care, as it
is non-greasy yet highly moisturizing and has been known to help prevent hair loss. As
if this isn’t enough, Watermelon Seed Oil also has a very long shelf life
since it contains a lot of natural Vitamin E. It is also rich in B Vitamins and Vitamin A as well as the minerals magnesium, iron, phosphorus, copper, potassium and manganese.

* We use Watermelon Seed Oil in three of our Beauty Oils:
Ambrosia Multi-tasking Beauty Oil, Sweet Dreams Beauty Oil and our new
Minimalist Multi-tasking Oil.

** Pore-clogging and Acne-exacerbating ingredients, many of
which are commonly found in skin, body, and hair products

Now that you’re well informed on the benefits of Watermelon
Seed Oil, we’re sure you’re excited to try one of our Beauty Oils, which are
all perfect for the hair as well as the skin. We are sure you won’t regret it and
remember… a little goes a long way, so a few drops will be all you’ll need!

<del></del>

<del></del>

<del></del><del></del><del></del>

Are you having trouble finding your perfect shade of Foundation? Lucy Minerals does CUSTOM BLENDS for a $3 charge. If after receiving your “Try It” Size Jars, you find you need a mixture of two of our shades, just order a Full Size Jar of Foundation in one of your shades and then make a note in the comment box with your shades and proportions. (Such as 1/2 Light and 1/2 Cream or 1/3 Creamy Bisque and 2/3 Light Medium). Please allow a few extra days for custom blends. Most of our customers find their perfect shade without having to do a custom blend, but we want everyone to know that custom blends are available. (This is only for a blend of Lucy Minerals shades. We cannot replicate shades from another company).

When you are testing your shades, apply to your jaw line on clean
skin. You want the Foundation to blend with your neck so it looks
natural. Allow it to sit for about 10 minutes and then check it in
natural light. If you find that you need a blend, make notes as you mix
very small amounts of Foundation shades and test on your jaw line. You
will need one shade that matches your complexion, and another shade that
is a few shades lighter for Concealing. Lucy Minerals doesn’t offer a
separate Concealer. You can get great coverage using our Foundation and a
Concealer Brush. If you have dry skin around your eyes, just mix a teeny bit of Ambrosia Serum with your minerals to create a creamy concealer.

Here is a guide to the Lucy Minerals Foundation Shades.

Snow White – Can be mixed with any shade to lighten it. Or some use it for highlighting.

Fair is very light and a bit pink – think Nicole Kidman.

Light, Bisque, Light Medium, Shell Beige, Medium, and Soft Beige
are our neutral shades. I am of German heritage and have a bit of pink
to my skin and this is the group of shades that I use. Many women are
able to use these shades because they blend well with variety of skin
tones.

Pale Olive, Creamy Olive, Medium Olive and Tan Olive
are soft olive shades. They aren’t as green as you would think. And
sometimes if you have what you consider to be yellow-toned skin, the
olive shades may work for you.

Cream, Creamy Bisque, and Golden Medium, Medium Caramel and Caramel
are our soft warm shades for golden skin tones. If you have red tones
in your hair, there is a good chance these will work for you. But
everyone is unique. It helps to look at the inside of your wrist to see
if you have golden tones in your skin.

Toffee and Cocoa are our darkest shades. These
will work for many women with darker complexions and tend to darken a
bit when they warm to the skin. So you can’t judge the color until it
sits on the skin for about ten minutes.

I listed each group of shades from the lightest to darkest. If you google “Lucy Minerals Swatches” you will find lots of swatches online to compare.
